[QTI] "external" variables

Dear all,

it's being a while since I did some work with QTI so apologies for
the question but I looked in archives and the spec and can't seem to
find a good answer to my question or a justification for the absence
of the following requirement.

I am wondering if the spec itself or the requirements for delivery
engines define a way to allow the engine to send some parameters (e.g.
values for variables) to the item. That is, if there is a way to
define variables in some specific way that lets the engine know that
it needs to set a value to this variable.

This is often needed if I require some combination of external
input required to adapt an exercise. As far as I understand this is
not the same as defining the variable and setting its value to NULL
for example because my engine wouldn't know that the exercise requires
this value to be set externaly.

Thanks for your answer in advance,

Manolis
