Hi Clarence,
It means that the number of attempts for that item can be larger than
one.
That can be for example because the candidate selects or enters the
incorrect responses the first time. Or because the question itself
consists of a combination of responses required by the candidate (like
in the Monty Hall example).
Looking at it from a more "technical way" it means that the item body is
displayed, the candidate submits the response, response processing takes
place and then the item body is displayed again (possibly with new
inline feedback or other parts of the item body that are displayed or
hidden based on the response).
In an adaptive item the moment the question "ends" is determined by the
response processing setting a build in Outcome Variable
"completion_status" to "completed" while in a non-adaptive item the item
ends after the response processing takes place once.
Most advanced adaptive item in the example set is the Monty Hall example
that I mentioned before:
